As a younger woman living with stage IV cancer, Emma Jane from Edinburgh took up painting in oils as a welcome distraction from life in ‘Cancerland’. Her art and also her writing are a way to focus on, and celebrate, beauty in the ordinary and everyday, and find joy in the little things and moments in life . Writing mainly haikus, and painting almost abstract landscapes garnered from places real and imagined, she posts her work online under the guise of The Kintsugi Girl. In her paintings she aims to capture not a picture postcard representation but more the essence, or sense of a place – a memory, or the feeling it evokes. She is inspired by the land and the light and the changeable weather in Scotland, especially in the far north of the country, be it bleak or beautiful, or preferably both! She is working on a series of paintings inspired by the Northern Lights – a trip to see them in real life definitely on her bucket list.
