Maxted, Karen

Karen grew up in Glasgow and is in her final year of an undergraduate degree at ECA. She lives and works in Troon, Ayrshire. Karen’s paintings are both representational and abstract, emerging from snippets of found images which are reworked. Images saturate our lives, such that we barely engage with them. Painting gives Karen time to consider these images, taking tome to reflect on colour, texture and surface. The reworked images are used across a variety of works, like letters or number, creating hybrid collaged images with endless compositional possibilities for paintings. This is reflected in the titles of her work. Karen has exhibited at Visual Arts Scotland exhibitions at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh and is currently exhibiting as one of the finalists at The Open Contemporary Young Artist Award at The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle.
