George Cockburn is a Scottish artist resident in Edinburgh. He graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in the ‘70s where he studied under Phillipson, Blackadder and Houston among others and specialised in drawing, painting and print-making. Following Post-Graduate Scholarship and teacher training years, he taught Art & Design in a number of secondary schools, retiring in 2011 from a 20 year tenure as Head of Department at James Gillespie’s High School in Edinburgh. Being brought up in the countryside of Midlothian, where as a child he encountered Willie Gillies who encouraged his interest in art, his subject matter, whilst wide ranging, has always reflected a sense of place, atmosphere and experiencing locations. He has exhibited across the country with much work and commissions in private collections.
